External Collaborator Visits GMAP (Gabriele Mencagli)

Between September 3 and 13, 2019, we received the visit of Professor Gabriele Mencagli, from the University of Pisa, in Italy. Gabriele came to Brazil through the Institutional Internationalization Project (PUCRS-PrInt), which aims to develop, consolidate and integrate the international and intercultural parts in the scope of teaching, research, innovation, and extension at the University.

Gabriele is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pisa, is a researcher at the ParaGroup (Parallel Programming Models Group) in Pisa, and is also a GMAP contributor. His teaching and research activities are in the area of High-Performance Computing and parallel architectures.

On September 6, Professor Gabriele Mencagli was received by members of GMAP at the Churrascaria Freio de Ouro, in the Menino Deus neighborhood, in Porto Alegre.

On Monday, September 9, Professor Gabriele Mencagli presented the lecture “Windflow: a C ++ 17 parallel library for data stream processing on multicores”. WindFlow is a parallel library for data stream processing in shared memory architectures with multi-core processors and GPU devices.WindFlow is based on the parallel building blocks of FastFlow, a parallel programming framework developed at the University of Pisa. The lecture can be viewed on the PUCRS YouTube channel.

On September 4, 5, 11 and 12, Professor Gabriele Mencagli gave the course “Data Stream Processing (from the parallelism perspective)”, to the students of the PUCRS Graduate Program in Computer Science (PPGCC). The course aimed to provide a solid foundation in the Data Stream Processing research field, with the introduction to the theory behind stream processing, an overview of the most famous stream processing frameworks (for example, Apache Storm, Apache Flink, and Spark Streaming) and the most recent results. In addition, at the end of the course, the parallel tools FastFlow and WindFlow were presented.
