GMAP researcher Phd Thesis Proposal Presentation

On Wednesday, August 3rd, Luis Cassiano Goularte Rista (GMAP researcher), defended his proposal for a Phd thesis at the Faculty of Informatics of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul.

The presentation took place in the auditorium 516 of building 32 (FACIN) at 2:00 pm.

Dissertation title and abstract:

Title: Elastic and Autonomic Horizontal Provisioning of Cloud Resources for Stream Parallelism

Abstract: Nowadays, the researches to improve the resources provision using the elasticity paradigm have become relevant for cloud computing environments. Moreover, the concept of autonomic computing, that aims to turn the system into self-managed, and stream applications (eg., audio, video, network) have emerged. Although, there is a common challenge for using autonomic provision on stream parallelism. Performance and elasticity complexities have to be taken into account. For instance, the applications are usually developed considering a limited number of processes. As a consequence, the autonomic computing is considered a potential solution for dynamic resources provision. Related to autonomic computing, elasticity allows a better resources usage in an adaptive way. Thereby, this study proposes a strategy for autonomic and horizontal elasticity based on a hybrid approach (reactive and predictive). As a case study is intended to use a strategy for the development of a module to integrate with the SPar DSL, such approach aims to enable elasticity exploitationon PaaS level. Therefore, this study goal is to analyze the impact of an autonomic elasticity using metrics, such as performance, portability and efficiency regarding parallelized stream processing applications.
