Between October 19th and 21st, the XXII Symposium on High Performance Computing Systems (WSCAD 2022) took place in Florianópolis. WSCAD is an annual event promoted by the Special Commission on Computer Architecture and High Performance Processing (CE-ACPAD) of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). Since the 2000s, the event has presented the main developments, applications, and trends in Computer Architecture, High Performance Processing, and Distributed Systems.
This year, PUCRS Ph.D. student Gabriella Andrade presented the work entitled “Brazilian Opinion on Productivity in Parallel Application Development” at WSCAD. This work was advised by Prof. Dr. Luiz Gustavo Fernandes and Prof. Dr. Dalvan Griebler and also had the collaboration of Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Santos from UNIRIO.
The study abstract is presented below:
“With the popularization of parallel architectures, several programming interfaces have emerged to facilitate the exploration of such architectures and increase developers’ productivity. However, developing parallel applications is still a complex task for developers who need more experience. In this work, we conducted a survey to find out the opinion of parallel application developers on the factors that hinder productivity. Our results showed that the experience of developers is one of the main reasons for low productivity. In addition, the results indicated ways to overcome this problem, such as improving and encouraging the teaching of parallel programming in undergraduate courses.”
In addition to the technical sessions of the main track, WSCAD 2022 featured scientific and industrial lectures, mini-courses, panels, workshops, thesis and dissertation contests, and a parallel programming marathon. More information about WSCAD 2022 can be found on the official website.
